There where a lot of major events in the twentieth century that sparked what would be
called the crisis of belief. The events that were consider major were world war I and II,
many revolutions, and the great depression. These events brought about modernism and
nihilism. There are six writers that express there feelings about these events in different
Ways, some writers base there opinion on death and others based there views on the
progress or transition time. We will see how Fromm, Camus, Nietzsche, Sartre, Freud,
and Lenin view and also how they analyze the events of the twentieth century. We will
also look at some more creative writers, philosophical thinkers and political
commentators that helped give birth to what is known as modernism.

wrote the “ After Theory, 2003” he says that modernism took away order of the middle
class and technology was its the down fall. The nineteenth century writer Karl Marx
states that a revolution can only occur when social conditions change because when a
society changes a persons needs changes as well. Tom Stoppard a contemporary play
writer claims that nihilism is blind to problems that they are not concerned with them,
that their no hope, no value, and no meaning lifestyle is how all people should view life.
Marcel Duchamp says that artists poison the atmosphere with their art because their art is
led by their egos and Picasso claims that art is the image of what is happening.
