I come across double ( two ) contrasting linking words/phrases in one sentence in newspaper, conversation many times.

Why ?

What is the difference among these sentences ?


She is religious. Although, on the other hand, she is drunk many times.

She is religious. Although, , she is drunk many times.

She is religious. On the other hand, she is drunk many times.

None of those sentences is natural English.

Can you give us some actual sentences from newspapers for us to consider?

The first link is total rubbish, the second is a joke and the less said about the last, the better.

Pleonasms like this are usually considered poor speech in many languages, certainly in English. Like all repetition, however, they do serve to stress the speaker's point, which in the case of "although" and "on the other hand" introduces a contrary proposition.

My advice would be to excise pleonasm rigorously from writing, and to avoid it in speech except in the very rare case -- perhaps once a day or even a week -- you really want to stress something.

Ordinarily, but let's look at the sentence. It's not a valid example.

"On the other hand, although recognising the inevitable hardship of a good many situations, which often could and should have been avoided, we should be careful not to overdramatise."

So, the only example given that pretends to be good formal writing, doesn't use the structure at all.
