Does it mean that socialism was rid of?

Without further context, I would interpret it as meaning "added."

I agree, and with the additional connotation of "at the last minute, on a whim".

It remained being a socialist country? I would have liked to have further context as well. We were given just sentences for translation.

Without further context, it could mean many things. :-D
Doesn't have to be about a country.
