Difficulty in searching threads.
Hello,
It is very difficult to search a thread through search option.
Just now, I have seen a thread with the title in or on.
I entered the same words in the search box but I couldn't get the thread.
Is there any solution for this?

There is a slight issue with the search facility which is that many two-letter words are not searchable because they crop up just too often. With a thread title like "Cellar or dungeon?" it would be quite easy, because those words don't often appear. However, the words "in", "or" and "on" appear in so many threads that it's unfeasible to search for them.
I don't know if one of the Moderators or Administrators might have a solution but I have to admit I've never found one.

My inability to search quickly for threads whose title I have forgotten by trying to search for words I know are in posts in the threads is one of the few things about the forum that frustrates me at times.

Your thread title should include all or part of the word/phrase being discussed.
If you just want to know the meaning of a word, try OneLook Dictionary Search first.

I think the search option would be of no use to user if it could not find the thread with exact words.
Suppose you answer a question about the use of the preposition in with time, you answer would be of no use when someone comes up with same doubt in future and can't find the earlier thread related to it.

I have seen in YAHOO ANSWERS where if you type a question it will show the questions which have words similar to what you type.

I just searched in or on and found this.
What's wrong with that?

Maybe I did something wrong, but that link took me to a results page which said it had 139,000 hits. None of the top few said it was a thread entitled exactly "in or on" which appeared to be the title of the thread the OP was searching for.
Bizarrely, when I typed "in or on" into the Search facility earlier, it told me it could find no matches.

Re: Difficulty in searching threads.
Well I have just searched in or on and found this:
Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms. The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search : on, in
So, what are you doing that you get results?

That's exactly what I get. Mind you, I'm also confused as to whether I should be typing in the Search box inside the banner, marked "Google custom search" or in the dropdown Search box in the menu bar which appears between My Posts and Quick Links. Having said that, I've tried both with no luck.

Re: Difficulty in searching threads.
It's the 'Google Custom Search' box at the top of the page.

OK, well that answered that question! Would I be right in thinking then that the OP can't have got the exact title of the thread he's looking for correct? If it were simply called "in or on", it should be the first hit, shouldn't it?
May I ask what the Search in the menu bar is for? It gives you the option to search threads or posts, by title or exact word etc. Does it simply not work?
