Ignore Button

Usingenglish. com has a nifty feature called the "ignore button." As I understand it (and I often MISunderstand things), if member George Washington does not want to read my posts, he can either (a) skip my posts or (b) click the ignore button (and my posts will not appear on his computer screen).

My question: When George pushes the ignore button, does that mean that his posts are also removed from my computer screen? After all, if George is never going to see my posts, I do not want to waste my time and effort in answering his questions.

Then why should I work hard to answer George's question if he is never going to see my post?

I agree, and as some people say, 'It don't make no sense.'

However, the underlying idea is that if George Washington chooses to ignore your posts, he cannot force you to ignore his. The ignore feature only works one way- otherwise it would be akin to censorship.

That's how I see it- it's an ignore rather than a mutual ignore button. However, I have never actually used it, so someone who has may know more. It controls your input (what you see), not your output (what others see). Erm, I think. I'll have to test it someday, but I have always seen shutting someone down as a form of censorship.

I agree and I'm definitely not in favour of a mutual ignore button, even though a "one-way" ignore may have a downside, as illustrated by TheParser.

One person should not be able to control what the other person sees (or doesn't see).

TheParser has a point, but George is unlikely to have blocked him before he answered the question. Blocking is normally the result of in-fighting and flaming.

I think Tdol is correct here.

May I just add that responses made here are not made only for the benefit of the original poster or thread starter. They are also read by many hundreds and thousands of other members and non-members. They can be found via our own site search and via Google, Bing, Facebook, mobile apps and more. They go a long way to helping to answer the questions of many many people, so please don't think that your responses are wasted on those who chose to ignore them. They aren't.
