Default unopened post

Why is it that on the Ask a Teacher forum unopened post is represented by an open envelope whilst on the Fun and Games forum post I have never looked at appears as a closed envelope?

Thanks

Yes, I know what the icons should be showing but in the 'Fun and Games' forum, new posts appear with the 'no new posts' icon!

EDIT: Maybe I have got it all wrong. What exactly are 'new posts'??? Those which I haven't read or what?
