I am looking for data to help in building a grammar checker for ESL writing. Any help in finding a corpus of ESL grammatical errors, or ESL writing in general would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. -- Tom Mitchell.

I honestly don't know of any ESL corpora that are available. I've seen glimpses and promises, but nothing concrete. Maybe it's time to set up an ESL writing submission page to create one.

If you are still searching, this may be of help to you. I was given a book called Teacher's Resource Guide of Language Transfer Issues for English Language Learners. It is put out by Rigby, a division of Harcourt, and is copyrighted 2004. It takes the ten most common primary languages and shows areas of difficulty in acquiring English grammar. It has a chart that shows the area of grammar, type of transfer error, what languages the error is common to, and the cause of the transfer difficulty. I have found it to be VERY helpful!
