    Suffix ""gate"

    Dears all,

    How the word gate modiy a word when used as suffix e.g. watergate, slapgate etc.

    Are these separate word?

    I have no idea what "slapgate" is but the name of the hotel that was at the heart of a presidential scandal was The Watergate. That is its proper name.

    The "gate" suffix has been used since then to describe a situation that has become a scandal - often humorously, but sometimes not. Because it will be a made-up word, there aren't hard rules about whether to hyphenate or make it one word.

    -gate is also used in British English for a scandal, again both with and without a hyphen.
