    Who or Whom?

    That person was the maid who Tobus thought she went back to hometown.

    Any suggestion on how to rearrange the sentence or should I use who or whom?

    You should get rid of 'she'. I wouldn't use 'whom' here because it is the subject of 'went', IMO.

    Thanks. So, "went" is the subject in the above sentence. And this literally will mean "She"?

    Yes, that's correct.
    Here's a way to tell:

    He thought she went back to her hometown.
    He thought who went back to her hometown? ('who" is the subject of 'went')

    I have a suggestion (or two). Try:

    It was the maid who Tobus thought went back to her hometown.
    Even better:
    Tobus thought the maid went back to her hometown.
