    There were pretty and good young women in Brundy who would gladly have married old Pruffett for his money, and loving mothers who would have advised and helped them in that direction had old Pruffett given them any en couragement.

    Could you please explain the bold parts?

    • had means if; i.e., if old Pruffret had shown any interest in marrying one of the young women--but he didn't show any interest; he wasn't interested in marrying one of them.
