Default preparing for my TEFL course

I am very new to all this,so please bare with me!

I am preparing for my TEFL course and reading the pre course pack.It asks an interesting question
"what does a student need to know about grammar"
not wishing to sound rude by answering "everything" I would appreciate some advice

Some SLA (second language acquisition) theorists would say that a student needs to know nothing about grammar. These theorists (and practitioners too) subscribe to the L1 = L2 concept, in which they believe that learning L2 can be done the same way as a baby learns its L1. And primary school children can speak fluently without knowing an adverb from their elbow.
I don't agree with this way of teaching, and obviously neither do you, but it's important to know that there is a wide range of opinions about the necessity of grammar in L2 teaching/learning.

You don't necessarily need to know the rules of grammar as they are taught to be able to speak a language, but it rarely does second language learners any harm.

in my opinion your students will express their needs through the procedures you fulfill in classroom. So upon their needs, you may design your grammar presentations.
