    What is the sum of...

    Hello.

    1. What is the sum of 4 and 7?
    2. What is the total of 4 and 7?

    Isn't #2 wrong?

No, not necessarily. If you know it is in context of addition (math)
However, the answer could be 47.

Better: What is the total when adding 4 and 7?

Re: What is the sum of...

It's not the expected question, but it's understandable. Total is synonymous with add up to:

What do 4 and 7 total?
What do 4 and 7 add up to?
    What do they total?
    What is their total?
