Default Difference between divided between and divided into.

    Hi,

Could somebody tell me which is the difference between divided between and divided into.

"... All of them contain a wide variety of information divided between (into) serious news, sports, politics ...."

Thanks in advance and good weekend .

It's a big enogh pizza. Why don't we just divide it between the the two of us? I don't really think we need to order another one.

between for two people - or for two things

We divide the recyclabe trash into three categories: glass containers, tin containers, and paper.

divide into - used for two or more than two

Use "into" for your example sentence. However, I think it's better rephrased.

All of them contain a wide variety of information, which they divide into three categories: serious news, sports, and politics.

"Divide into" is what you actually do to something. "Divide between" is how you then share it out.

Example: I divided the cake into 8 pieces, then divided the pieces between 8 people.

That sentence is a little messy but the idea is there.

Divided between (two), Divided into (more than two). The following examples make things clear.

Crude Oil and Natural Gas reserves are divided between two superpower blocks.
Is power divided between the national and state governments under the federal system of government?

A minute is divided into 60 seconds and an hour is divided into 60 minutes.

This is correct. The number is irrelevant.
You can divide something into two or six pieces; you can divide it between two people or among more than two.
But the primary distinction between "divide into" and "divide between" is not based on numbers.
