Default When to use worldwide and whole world?

What is the difference between whole world and wide world? When do you use one and not the other?

Use "worldwide" to modify a noun. It's an adjective.

The noun phrase "whole world" is often preceded by "in the".

    in the whole world

Football is a worldwide sport. (soccer in the US)

The whole world watches the International Olympic Games.

Is football the most popular sport in the whole world?

"Whole world" is a collective noun, and it takes a singular verb.

It's like "everyone". We say "everyone is listening".

In British usage, some collective nouns are treated as singular nouns or plural nouns. I don't know if this is the case with "whole world", as I'm not British. So maybe a BrE speaker can comment here.

There may be an exception or two, but in American English, collective nouns are singular.

I have seen and heard both "The whole world is..." and "The whole world are..."in BrE.
