    Cool Work that beat

An actor lives some time at a police precinct to get information for his cop role, and says:

"I spend a lot of time with guys who do that job and work that beat"

What does "work that beat" mean? That they earn the pay in a superlative manner?

    Thank You

In this sentence "beat" is a noun, a "beat" is the area covered by a particular policeman or group of policemen on patrol.
