    Default accents

    Are accents ever used in English? According to me they are, when a word ending in ed needs to be two syllabels instead of one, for instance the word mopéd. Not moped as in to mope around, but a kind of motor-bike.

    Words borrowed into English from, say French, have written "accents", or marks, but English words like "moped" do not carry an accent. "moped" is a noun, and -ed is part of the word. It's pronounced as mo'ped:

    moped around => mo'pt
    moped (a bike) => mo'ped
