Default managed to cover good ground

I held my head high and walked straight to the fi rst medium lane I came to. A guy doing freestyle was the only swimmer. Even I could tell that his technique was bad, but he still managed to cover good ground.

on this sentence, what does this mean >> managed to cover good ground ??

In this context, it just means that he was able to swim relatively fast (in spite of his bad technique).

Maybe it means that his swimming was just fine and approvable, though the technique was bad....

"covering good ground" means to move fast.

    He swam fast.

Yes, fine and approvable* because he was fast.

The point is that the idea of covering ground has to do with the idea of covering distance, and covering distance translates to speed here.

*This form of the word is very seldom used, although it's not wrong. How about satisfactory, acceptable, adequate, or passable?
