    Default on/in chair

    Hi

Go back to your table and sit on/in the chair.

--- Do we sit on or in the chair/armchair etc.

Generally we sit "on" a desk chair and "in" an armchair.

We also sit "at" a desk or table.

But if I say that I'm sitting in a chair that will be correct, right?
However I understand that saying: "I'm sitting on a chair" is more popular.

Only if you are sitting in an armchair.

The chair would have to be big enough to make the phrase "in a chair" correct. A relatively small, or regular chair, is understood to be a surface, so we say "on a chair". However, a big armchair that is part of a furniture set could be seen as something that surrounds the person who is seated, so we would be inclined to say "in a chair" or something like, "Archie enjoys watching TV sitting in his favorite armchair".
