Default a great deal of causes

I want to ask stg is 'a great deal of causes' correct in this sentence?
mary believes that a great deal of the causes of anger lay with other feelings.

I think I should use a great number of causes instead of a great deal of
    so am I right?

You are correct, but it should also be "anger lie" with other feelings, present tense, or "Mary believed that a great number of the causes lay with other feelings." past tense.

lay in the present tense means to place

    I am not a teacher.

No problem............... the incorrect use of lie and lay is widespread in Canada and by what I see on television advertisements in the US also.
