    'Just touching base'

    Tom is expecting Mary to travel to his home town this week. This morning, Mary sent Tom an email with the contents as follow:

    Dear Tom,

    Didn't hear back from you, just touching base.

    It means "just keeping in touch". "Just touching base" is one of the most annoying phrases in the English language.
