    It could indeed, but in my original post the question gives the context ("a teacher dislikes someone"), right?

    Defintely- I was just making an observation about the gerund rule, which is so widely ignored.

    Yes. Some say it is extinct.

    How about this:

    "I was awakened by the wolves howling." is the same as ...

    "I was awakened by the howling of the wolves."
    -------
    "I was awakened by the wolves howling." is the same as ...

    "I was awakened by the wolves which were howling."

    Same as before?
