    Hello. What is the origin or meaning of 'grand' in grandfather or grandmother. Thank you.

    Origin:
    Entered the language around 1350–1400; from Middle English gra(u)nd, gra(u)nt
    < from Old French grant, grand
    < from Latin grand- (s. of grandis) meaning "great, large, full-grown"

    It has a special genealogical use meaning "one generation more remote"
