Default without the other knowing about it

I am still reading the book Healing Words.

One sentence is about a presentiments from ones twin brother. He said: "......through our lives there has always been such strong sympathy between us that nothing has ever happened to one without the other knowing about it."Could you please explain to me the meaning of "nothing has ever happened to one without the other knowing about it."

    Thank you.

If something happened to one of us, the other (of us) always knew that it had happened.
