Default None of the above ......

    Let's say I list a few points

    (1) ......

    (2) ......

    (3) ......

then I say none of the above, do I use a verb for the singular or plural subject? What is the subject anyway? "None" is singular? "The above" is singular or plural? "None of the above" is singular or plural? "None of them" is singular or plural? I am totally confused. Please help. Many thanks.

then I say none of the above, do I use a verb for the singular or plural subject? I would use the plural verb. For example, 'None of (them)(the above) are correct.' What is the subject anyway? "None" is singular? The subject is "None", and depending what 'none' refers to, it can be singular or plural. For example, 'None of it is understandable.' "The above" is singular or plural? "None of the above" is singular or plural? "It depends on what "the above" is. Here, I consider your three points to be plural. None of them" is singular or plural? I consider it to be plural, but others may consider it to be singular. (see the reference from dictionary.com, including the Usage note)

In the 60s, the Counterculture suggested a new format for ballots:

    Vote for President:
    A) Nixon
    B) Johnson
    C) McCarthy

    1. Nixon
    2. Johnson
    3. McCarthy
    4. None of the above
    5. Abolish this office
