    Default purpose

    Are these sentences all correct:
1-He spoke in a way that we may understand him.
2-He spoke in such a way that we may understand him.

3-He spoke in a way that we understood him.
4-He spoke in such a way that we understood him.

Do 1 and 2 mean his purpose was being understood and 3 and 4 that the result was that we understood him?

    In 1&2, I'd use 'might', but I don't like #1 much.
