    gather/collect/assemble/muster/congregate

    Dear teachers,

    Would you be kind enough to explain to me the difference between the meaning of “gather”, “collect”, “assemble”, “muster” and “congregate”?

    The children were gathering seashells.
    Dark clouds were gathering in the sky.
    He gathered the remnants of his jollity around him.

    Many people assembled in the hall.
    To assemble an engine.
    The latest space flight assembled very important data for the future flight.
    A crowd assembled outside in the Hay-market.

    The teacher collected all the pupils in the hall.
    The purpose was to catch and collect people.

    Go and muster all the men you can find.
    They were trying to muster new soldiers.
    She tried to muster all her resources.
    I couldn’t muster up a single commonplace out of the thousands in my head.

    The church bell rang to congregate the members.
    Captain Nicolas made his way to the Place Victor Gelu where the sailors are wont to congregate.
    We have to pass laws forbidding people to congregate on the streets.

    From far and near the people were gathered/collected/assembled/congregated into the church.
    They gathered/collected/assembled/congregated for the sermon.

    All the pupils were assembled in the assembly hall to be examined by the doctor.
    All the pupils were collected in the assembly hall to be examined by the doctor.
    All the pupils were gathered in the assembly hall to be examined by the doctor.

    All the animals were gathered/collected/assembled in the meadow by the water hole.

    The children were gathering/collecting seashells. Collect is more appropriate as it implies careful selection of the like or related/useful things.

    They were trying to muster as many people as possible for recruitment as new soldiers. Trying to muster new soldiers sounds odd. Muster =to call (troops) together for a purpose,/to cause to come together/to call forth; summon up.
