Default Data - Plural or Singular

I know that for the longest time it was suggested to treat 'data' as a plural (e.g., the data are listed in the report as opposed to the data is listed ...). Is this still the case or has this been changed? I see the word 'data' no different than the word 'information,' yet they treated differently. Can someone please shed some light on this.

    Thanks so much as always.

    Paul

Data is the plural form of the Latin word datum [word].

It has become accepted as a word in its own right, giving the implication of a compilation of values.

So if you want to appear formal or educated, use it as a plural noun. If you want to be like Clinton, and seem the Everyman, go ahead and use it as a singular, many people will find that more natural. In this case, there's no perfect answer.

It also may vary according to the degree of formality preferred in a particular field- if there is a preference or tendency for one form, you could avoid treading on people's toes by doing the same.
