How do you pronounce "Edinburgh" ?

How do you pronounce "Edinburgh" ? At school I learned to pronounce it with a "bur-ri" ending, but is that the usual pronunciation ?

I have heard /edinburra/, mainly from the English.

I would pronounce it like this:inogolo - Pronunciation of Edinburgh : How to pronounce Edinburgh

The former is an American pronunciation. Another spelling is "Edinborough."

In many pronunciations the /n/ assimilates to the /b/, and you get [mb]; also, in connected speech I commonly hear it pronounced as only 3 syllables: /'edɪmbrə/ (the 4-syllable version sounds excessively precise to me).

    b

What do you mean by excessively precise? True the syllables become a bit slurred but they are there surely?

Under no circumstances is it "Edin-burg".

Re: How do you pronounce "Edinburgh" ?

Well I'm certainly not a slovenly speaker - indeed, during my PGCE Teaching Practice I was regarded as 'talking posh'. And I use both pronunciations - 4 syllables, when I'm on my best behaviour, and 3 syllables for everyday use (for example, if I were buying a train ticket I'd always say /'edɪmbrə/ ).

    b

    Edin - bur - ah.

    Seems to be popular

    I also hear..

    Edin - br - ah.

Not saying they are correct, but they seem to be popular pronunciation.
