Default A comma or a period,or both OK?

Have you been to New York?

1--Yes, I just went there last week.
2--Yes. I just went there last week.

My English teacher taught me, by using a comma, one must put 'I have' in this case and then put a period. After that, one could start a new sentence ' I just went there last week'.

Both are wrong (in BrE). You can say either: "Yes, I went there last week" or "Yes, I have just been there."

You mean when 'just' is used, it must be in present perfect tense?

In written language, is 'Yes. I went there last week.' correct?

I mean the period instead of the comma being used.

    My teacher says:

The standard written form is: Yes, I have. I went there last week.
If you omit 'I have', the sentence should be 'Yes. I went there last week.' , and 'Yes, (comma) I went there last week' is incorrect.

What do you think of that?

Yes, I went there last week.

In my opinion both of the above are correct.

    Hello jiaruchan

I follow the same rule as your teacher:

Comma: Yes, I have. I went there last week.
Period: Yes. I went there last week.

Thank you. I know it is a good rule. Do you know if there is such a rule written in any grammar book?

Both are acceptable here: Yes -- I just went there -- last week. Punctuate it as you will.

Thank you. This is another difference I have learned between AmE and BrE.
