    Question Envy or Jealousy?

    Hi there,
Can anyone possibly tell me the difference between the two words? Can they be used interchangably? Thanks a lot...

'envy' is related to the feeling of covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, possessions.

'jealousy' is more than that. It may also mean these:

    - to be troubled by suspicions -- jealous husband
    - anxiously desirious to guard something: jealous of the liberty of his country

Thanks...Is the difference more a question of the target, or the feeling inside then?

    Re: Envy or Jealousy?

Perhaps this is another way to think of it.

You may be envious of what others have, wishing you had it for yourself. I confess to feeling a bit envious when I meet people who can eat whatever they want and not get fat, and when I hear about a fabulous vacation. It doesn't mean I want to steal it away from them or that they don't deserve them - I just think it would be nice to experience those things for me.

You are jealous when you feel you deserve to have those things, that they should belong to you, that it's wrong for others to have them (when you do not), or that someone is about to take it from you unfairly.

As you can see, I find jealousy to be "worse."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Re: Envy or Jealousy?

Is it possible to say healthy envy or jealousy meaning not a vicious or malicious feeling but rather useful to get better results or something like that (motivation)?

I disagree. Why is Envy one of the Seven Deadly Sins?
To me, jealousy is more likely to cause problems for the jealous person and the other party. Jealousy is the "green-eyed monster", and it really can eat up people from the inside.
Envy can be productive, as greegorush has pointed out. If you are envious of someone's lifestyle, it can make you work harder.
