    need help with correct spelling of a word used in a sentence

    what is the correct spelling of the word root or rout when used in the following sentence.

    "I am rooting for the underdog."

    or

    "I am routing for the underdog."

    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    root (for)
    1 : to noisily applaud or encourage a contestant or team : cheer
    2 : to wish the success of or lend support to someone or something
