Red face shachel ? common sense?

Is there anyone could help me to figure out the meaning and source of this word "shachel"?
I read it from a book "Top down" by Harold J. Leavitt, in page 44.
What's the relation between "shachel" and "common sense" ? Is there any cultural metaphor? (i am from Asian country.)
