    Question Re: Obama's Inaugural Address-2

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God?given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.
The text I quoted is from Obama's inaugural address.

Could someone please answer the questions of mine as below?

    - the words of Scripture = the words of Holy Bible?
    - What does 'the time has come to set aside childish things' refer to? Did it mean Obama requests people to be mature to face difficulties?
    - What does 'choose better history' refer to? Or why did Obama say to choose better history?

    Thanks!

Yes. America does not yet have a full separation of state and religion.

    - What does 'the time has come to set aside childish things' refer to?
It refers to a verse from the Bible.
"When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me." (1 Corinthians 13:10-12)

Did it mean Obama requests people to be mature to face difficulties?
Probably. Or it could mean that now that there was an intelligent president in the White House, it was time to put away the childish ways of the former administration.

    It's from the Bible - it doesn't bear over-interpretation.

    - What does 'choose better history' refer to? Or why did Obama say to choose better history?
To choose the better models of US history to follow, rather than choosing bad examples from history?

    Thanks!
The "God-given promises" are an American invention. The Bible doesn't claim that all are equal or free or have the right to pursue happiness. God never made these promises (in the Bible, or anywhere else I can think of). These are humanist concepts which the founding fathers claimed were 'God-given'.
