    Default language and power..PLEASE HELP

Can any one help me to solve this dilemma

Commenting on language and power in analyzing discourse, the author of Language and Power, Norman Fairclough, observes that there is a correlation between unequal power relations and the way language is used.

    1. Quote and discuss one encounter that displays power in discourse. This should NOT be from your study material. Students can choose either a spoken face-to-face*encounter, or an example from the media, which could be written or spoken.
    2. Categorize areas of constraints enacted through discourse.
    3. Provide examples of language indicators of power in the quoted discourse.

    Hello Bella,

The first step is to choose a conversation as an example. The conversation must take place in a context where one person is more powerful than the other, e.g. parent + small child, interviewer + interviewee, doctor + patient.

You would then analyse the language that each person uses, and pick out the forms of speech that reflect the inequality of power.

(For instance, when old people are in hospital, nurses often address them by their first name, like children. The old people however are likely to call the nurse "nurse".)

    Best wishes,

    Hi!

    Try this dialogue:

    X: I give up!
Y: How dare you say that! You have to solve this problem, you can't simply walk away now!
X: It's no use. I can't do that and I'm not going to try it again.
Y: I'm absolutely sure that you're capable of doing it and you must not let us down.
X: I resign and you have to accept my decision.
Y: No, I don't. You must be sensible, we are obliged to finish it.
X: Sorry, I'm unable to continue, I quit.
Y: But you're a man of great ability and the team depends on you.
X: I'm not the only one to lead.
Y: I totally disagree with you! You are the one who leads the field in it and we are not in position to accept your resignation, we simply need you and need you now!
    X: I don't know, I still doubt whether we'll finish on time.
    Y: We certainly will, together.
X: OK, I may be mistaken in my judgment, you've convinced me. Let's make another effort.

I've made up this dialouge to demonstrate the power of persuasion. It may be of some use to you.

I think you would need to choose the dialogue yourself, Bella, for the question to be worth answering!
