    Default problem with a tree ( please help )

    Hello everyone,
    Hope you're fine

    I've a small problem with the following sentence:
    The man in the classroom believes he is smart.
    The man ( NP )
    in the classroom (PP)
    Believes (VP)
    He is smart (S)
    Ok... then , the problem is how can I draw the tree if I have NP, PP, VP, S ?
    it should be NP + VP .. right ?!

    and the PP + S ... with what i have to connect ?
    please anyone can draw the tree ? =(

    I hope my question is clear

    I am sorry. I cannot help you with a tree.
    But I can tell you that with the Reed-Kellogg system that sentence would be very easy.

    Cool Re: problem with a tree ( please help )

    I'll try to represent your sentence using the Phrase Structure Rules, somehow -_-"

    S:The man in the classroom believes he is smart.

    S= NP + PP + AUX + VP

    NP= Det....+.....N
    ..........|................|
    .........The........man

    PP=..P.........+.......NP
    .........|.............../...|
    .........|..........Det...N
    .........|............|.......|
    ........in..........the...classroom

    Aux= 0

    VP=.V.......+.......VP
    .........|..................|
    .........|..................S'
    .........|..................|.......\............. \
    .........|...............NP....AUX.........VP
    .........|.................|..........|........... ...|.....\
    .........|................N.........|............. .V.....AD
    .........|................|...........|........... ...|........|
    .........|................|...........|........... ...|.......A
    .........|................|...........|........... ...|.......|
    .....believes......he........0..........is......sm art

    Reed-Kellogg is an American system and is little known outside of the USA.
    It is like a visual language. I find it very easy to use for demonstrating the structure of sentences.
    Here is a website that might work as an introduction to the process. Warning -- it will be very different from tree diagrams (which I don't understand very well at all)

    Thanks again .. my sister

    hmmm .. as I said before we can NOT put PP under the S
    I spent all the night on this syntax chap. =(

    i found this:

    S = NP + VP (AUX)

    NP= ....... (PP) ......
    .
    .

    in my sentence we have to put the PP under the NP
    then we'll get NP + VP .. that means we have The S now

    S contains NP, VP (AUX) < optional ... but PP, i don't think so

    that's what i've learnd =(

    if i wrong correct me ... and so sorry .. i think you'll kick me =P

    SORRY again

    Ja ~
