    Question Compelling Necessity

    Dear teacher,
I came across this sentence:"Was it always your ambition from childhood to write, or was it a compelling necessity rather than an ambition?" Is "compelling" using here would mean forceful? And "compelling neccessity" would mean forceful requirement?

No, it simply means that the person had to write. Perhaps he needed to bring in some badly needed income to support his family...?

So what is the meaning of the word compelling used in this way?
