    Default a proxy war

Yemen will become a battleground for a proxy war between the United States and Saudi Arabia.

What does "proxy" mean in this sentence exactly?

It means that, rather than fight each other, they will each use factions that they support in Yemen to do the fighting for them. Typical superpower behaviour.
