    Why can you say absolutely awful but not absolutely bad?

    I wouldn't say, that "absolutely bad" is wrong. I have looked in google, and I have found about 5.000 entries.
    Look here.

    But I think, that "absolutely bad" is more used in refer to the health. "Absolutely awful" is more used to describe incidents.

    Examples:
    He feels absolutely bad.
    The accident was absolutely awful.

    Because there are different degrees of 'bad', but 'awful' is an extreme, so you can only emphasise it.
