    Default 2nd conditional

    Would the following sentence be an example of the 2nd conditional:
    ´If we had matches we could light a fire.´

    Yes, it's correct. An another example could be: If I were you, I would have a word with my boss.

    I agree with Dany- it's a second conditional. You can use 'could' instead of 'would', but the meaning is different- this sentence means that with matches they would be able to make a fire, but not that they would necessarily do it. If you said 'If we had matches we would light a fire', then it is definite.
