Default Prevention of disease, Delaying the onset of disease

I want to have a single word suitable to be used in medical parlance for the following condition:
'delaying the onset of a disease' (clearly distinguished from 'complete prevention of occurence of a disease')

What part of speech do you want it to be? You seem to want a verb meaning "to delay the onset of a disease". I doubt whether there is one that fits all this information into it.
