Not a teacher..

I fell ill while I was on holiday

was - past tense
being - present tense

So dnt confuse two tenses :-D

"when" sounds better to me than "while". But it is not clear whether you were
feeling ill during the whole holiday or not.

I'd say I was feeling ill.

was - past tense
being - present tense - No this is simply a participle.

So dnt confuse two tenses :-D

I was being - past progressive tense. Not present.

No, you can't say "I was being on holiday".
You say "I fell ill while I was on holiday".
new2 was wrong about the grammar, but right about the usage.
