Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

[FONT=&quot]The heaven being spread with this pallid screen and the earth with the darkest vegetation, their meeting-line at the horizon was clearly marked.[/FONT]
meeting-line = tangent

By pride comes only contention, but with the well-advised is wisdom.

contention = a contentious speech act; a dispute where there is strong disagreement

One long contention of fraud against robbery.

contention = dispute

As if there had been a contention among them who would do the best.

contention = competition, emulation

This is not a time for contention.

contention = dispute

The theory of evolution is a “Bone of Contention” for the past 150 years.

bone of contention = a matter for argument; subject about which there is disagreement

The rival teams were in contention for the championship.

contention = contest, competition

In this pub (public house) villagers turn up with say, a dozen eggs and in return they get themselves a pint of beer.

The missing boy turned up an hour later.

A man without training works at whatever jobs turn up.

My brother has just turned up from India.

turn up = appear or be found suddenly or unexpectedly, arrive

meeting-line = tangent= It is a straight line starting from the point where the sky touches the curved surface of the earth.

I think all are correct. You can add one more: Something turned up, so I couldn't go. (happened unexpectedly)
