    Default What's the difference?!

    Hi,

How come that the British use "Trousers" for "pants", but they have the word "underpants"?! (any origin for the words?) Thanks.

"pants" is short for "pantaloons" - tightly fitting garments for the lower part of the body + the legs, worn as undergarments. I have no idea why they became the accepted term in the US for the outer garment.

I was thinking the other day that clothing and parts of the car are probably among the most "same but different" words we have between us.

All different meanings on either side of the Atlantic.
    Jumper
    Vest
    Pants
    Boot
    Bonnet
    Rug
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
