Please tell me, which sentence is more correct? Thank you!

    1) Both saprotrophic and plant pathogenic species of fungi were isolated from the rhizosphere of plants.

2)Saprotrophic and also plant pathogenic species of fungi were isolated from the rhizosphere of plants.

Both’ is a predeterminer referring to two things( here - saprotrophic and plant pathogenic) together, where as 'also' is an adverb. So the first sentence is correct.
