I need an explanation to the idiom 'Under the wire' used in this context:
JORDON: Just out of curiosity... Why have you been asking me to have a meal with you every five minutes?
I like you. I've been tryin' to get it in under the wire.
The usual meaning in the nick of time does'nt make sense to me.
Use of the term, "under the wire" suggests that there is some "deadline" or point in time that beyond a certain point would be too late for a response or some action. Given that definition and your example, it is difficult to determine to what "deadline" Leo refers, especially if Jordon doesn't seem to understand Leo's persistence.
