Your sentence is fine. Normally if you are unable to attend work it is customary to apologise. Alternatives in English are " With regret, I am unable to attend xxxxx today, due to illness" or "I am sorry that I am too unwell to attend work today." However, your sentence is fine.

I will miss work today as I am not well.
I will miss work today because I am not well.
Because I am ill, I will miss work today.
I feel terrible, Boss. Can I stay home today?;-)

"day-off" is not a word as far as I know.

Thanks in advance.
I am taking today off, as I am not feeling well.

I am talking a day off today as I'm not feeling well.
'day-off' isn't a word. Perhaps 'off-day' is: "I'm taking an off-day".
But you mean "a day off".
