Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

We are ready to participate in this process as a European, non-aligned state.

non-aligned = neutral, unentangled

India and Pakistan are on speaking terms again.

on speaking terms = ready and willing to communicate, not alienated or estranged

Jane and Tom have been on the outs with one another since Tom started to date another woman.

be on the outs with = to not be on speaking terms with someone; be in disagreement with someone

We were on the verge of going bankrupt when, unexpectedly, my wife won the lottery and our business was saved.

on the verge of = to be about to do something; be very close to

You can’t go yet. It’s still pelting with rain.

It's pelting down outside, hadn't you better wail a few minutes before going out?

pelt = rain heavily

Stop those boys pelting stones at the poor cat!

pelt = cast, hurl, or throw repeatedly

The crowd pelted the speaker with questions until the chairman had to stop them.

pelt = overwhelm; pester with question

As soon as school was over, the children pelted out to play.

pelt = dash; hurry

The rabbit pelted along,with the dog giving chase.

pelt along = rush along; move fast

Malcolm is working hard. I hope he can keep it up.

keep it up = continue to do or maintain something

Her volunteer work made a difference in many lives.

make difference = be important, matter

It makes no difference to me if we go immediately or in an hour.

We told him not to do it, but it made no difference.

make no difference = an antonym of “make a difference”

Thank you again for your kindness.

Regards,

V.
