Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

March 1 deadline ago for the murder of the first general director of ORT Vladislav Listyev.

The deadline for the papers on Shakespeare is November 10.

deadline = a final date; a term of limitation; a final date by which a project, such as a term paper, is due

At this point in the criminal case of this controversial murder has already collected more than 200 volumes of material.

at this point = at this moment

"You'll live in the cheaper barracks at the outset; later you can move into the better cabins," the camp director said to the new boys.

at the outset = at the start; at the beginning

The two runners reached the finish line at the same time.

at the same time = in the same moment; together

John did pass the test; at the same time, he didn't know the subject very well.

at the same time = in spite of that fact; even though; however; but; nevertheless

Murder Listyev is symbolic in nature - it was the first high-profile contract killing of 90-s, followed by others.

high-profile = an intentionally conspicuous, well-publicized presence or stance

contract killing = ordered killing

For the first few days after the check arrived, they ate high on the hog.

ate high on the hog = to eat or live well or elegantly

After years of hard work, the Grants found themselves on easy street.

on easy street = having enough money to live very comfortably; rather rich

After his rich uncle died, Richard was in the chips.

After years of struggle and dependence, air transportation is in the money.

When he's in the money, he's extremely generous to his friends.

in the chips = having plenty of money; prosperous; rich

in the money = in the chips

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V.

I don't think you can use "ago" here, along with "deadline"
...

Your usage for high-profile might be correct, but I think that it doesn't fit the definition. High/low profile is about attitudes, for example, a celebrity may prefer to keep a high-profile while a figutive should keep a low profile.

Hi euncu,

Thank you for your explanatory notes.

Here a few words in corroboration of my interpretation of the phrase “high-profile” as well as an example sentence containing the phrase in question.

high-profile = well-known, highly publicized

high-profile - Definition of high-profile at YourDictionary.com

a high-profile event = an event attracting much attention and publicity

high profile assassination = widely discussed assassination = an assassination that has made a noise in the world

The importance of computer forensics has become more apparent with the spate of high profile data theft crimes happening in Singapore.

Regards,

V.
