    Default Grammar: is or are

I am correcting composition for Grade 4 and a couple of my students wrote: The second thing is the lockers.
I wanted to know if it should be is or are? and if someone knows the rule.

    The second thing/second item/second subject/second problem - singular - is

    The problem is the lockers.
    The lockers are a problem.

Thank you. I still don't understand because the sentence is :The second thing is the lockers not;The problem is the lockers.

Thing’ is a countable noun used to refer an object/idea/situation etc. Here it is in singular form and acts as the subject(The second thing ). So it should agree with the singular verb ‘is’

I think if we convert the sentence into complex sentence retaining the main clause as ‘The second thing is the lockers’ it would make things clear.
The first thing that one has to offer, is prayer.
The second thing that one should explore, is the lockers

    ********** NOT A TEACHER **********
    Good morning.

    (1) Yes, it is confusing.

    (2) For example: My favorite fruit IS grapes.

    (a) The rule is very clear: "fruit" is singular, so we are told to use "is."

    (b) But we say " Grapes are my favorite fruit."

    (2) To make things easy, most books say: make the verb agree with the subject: fruit - is; grapes - are.

    Have a nice day!!!
