May I have your help regarding to the statement below?

It is months/years since your have been back.

Might I understand the reason why we still use singular(is) after it even though the real subject is months or years.

Thanks. I am not Native English speaker, so maybe sometimes my expression is not good enough to convey my real message. sorry about that.

If you look at it like this "It's (it has) been years since you've been back" you might find it easier to understand.
